January's pick of the curator - Céline Felga

All Celine Felga's painting bear ironic titles. This one refers to the monetary situation of painters, with an allusion to the “Très riches heures du duc de Berry”, painted by the Limbourg brothers at XV century. This painting is a self-portrait of the artist painted as a soldier. It consists in a collage of pictures of a still life and a sleeping soldier in a trench. It includes all the elements from birth to death (spermatozoid, sun, death), however only the latter shows a movement, whereas life elements are still. Life is dead seems to suggest this “uncanny” painting.
